High Mass vs. Low Mass
The prayers of a Missa Privata, also known as a low Mass, are spoken by the priest rather than chanted. There may be no music at all, or a choir may be permitted to sing hymns. If the Mass is a low Mass, the choir is not allowed to sing any of the Ordinary or Propers.
For most low Masses at Our Lady of the Gulf, we sing English or Latin hymns, Gregorian Chant hymns, and various polyphonic motets.
Most of the prayers of the Missa Cantata (sung Mass/high Mass) are sung by the priest or the choir. The Ordinary and Propers of the Mass must be chanted.
At OLG we normally begin and end Mass with familiar English hymns. We usually use Mass VIII Ordinary and sing the full Gregorian Propers whenever possible.
On our Resource page, you can find a link to listen to the
Mass VIII Ordinary and Propers for Upcoming High Masses.
The following description is from the National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion website.
Rorate Caeli is Latin for “Drop down, ye heavens” and are the opening words of the Introit (which is an opening psalm or antiphon), coming from Isaiah 45:8.
“Rorate, caeli, desuper, et nubes pluant justum, aperiatur terra, et germinet Salvatorem.”
“Drop down dew, ye heavens, from above, and let the clouds rain the just: let the earth be opened and bud forth a Savior.” – Isaiah 45:8
A Rorate Caeli Mass is traditionally celebrated just before dawn in Advent as a devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Mass is only lit by candles, representing Mary’s role in bringing the Light of the World into the darkness of the world. You can view past Rorate Caeli Masses here:

We have been very blessed at Our Lady of the Gulf for several years now to be able to have a Missa Cantata for Easter Sunday! Our Latin Mass Schola sang for this beautiful liturgy April 20, 2025.

We were also so very blessed again this year to have the Escobedo family playing Antonio Vivaldi's Sonata "Al Santo Sepolcro“ E flat Major, RV 130 on organ and strings, Mozart's "Ave Verum" and several other beautiful selections, for this sacred Easter liturgy and adding such a special touch to lift the minds and hearts of all in attendance! He is risen! He is risen indeed!
